When we introduced our original Sheer Genius SPF 50 last spring, we were wowed by the moisturization it provided. Even those of us with dry skin were able to use it to replace our other moisturizers, which really convinced us that it would be a great addition to our mineral sunscreen line. But we knew we wanted another version, too. One for the makeup-wearers, with a hint of a tint … just enough to even out your skin and give you a healthy glow, so that on the average day, you could also skip your regular foundation or tinted moisturizer. Along the way to getting to that formula, we wondered, what if we jazzed up the skin care aspect just a bit?
That’s what led us to Hyaluronic Acid. It’s a buzzy ingredient right now, lots of products have it added because of it can hold 1000 times its weight in water, which means extra deep hydration for your skin. But we didn’t want to fall for the little “trick” that some brands do … they include an ingredient, but such a low percentage that it really does not provide any real benefit. We felt strongly that the Hyaluronic Acid needed to be at a percentage that would be actually effective. So that’s what we did.
Adding both a tint and Hyaluronic Acid took this newest Sheer Genius version to a different level, where it truly is a triple-threat. But we also held true to our company values. First, unlike many tinted moisturizer/sunscreen products on the market, Sheer Genius Universal Tint is still a mineral sunscreen. It is made with non-nano zinc oxide, and no chemical sunscreen actives whatsoever. Because that’s what we do -- mineral sunscreen and only mineral sunscreen. And second, we wanted to continue with our goals of reducing plastic waste, so we once again made this product in a tube made from sugarcane bioplastic, which means that no petroleum by-products are used to make the tube. And it is recyclable. If you live somewhere that you have co-mingled recycling, toss the tube in with your mixed plastics. (Remove the cap first. Unfortunately, it is too small to be recycled curbside.) If you have to sort your recyclables, include the tube with your #2 recyclables.
Regular use of Sheer Genius Universal Tint will also help improve your skin barrier, thanks to moisturizing ingredients like Squalane (also from sugarcane) and Jojoba Esters, and of course the Hyaluronic Acid. And if you want a sheer skin tint to wear to indoors as well as out, it’s nice that Sheer Genius Universal Tint also protects the skin from HEV (blue) light.
Just like our original Sheer Genius SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen + Moisture, this tinted version still protects from 98% of UVB light, protects the skin from free radicals and reduces the appearance of fine lines. But it does an even better job reducing the appearance of blotchiness and uneven skin tone, and it is not exactly “invisible” on all skin tones, but it does blend with all skin tones. Every model on our Sheer Genius Universal Tint page is wearing the product, blended in, or in the process of blending it in. It really does blend with all skin tones.
